The Blackdown Tableland & Expedition Range

This is the road heading southeast from Blackwater towards the Blackdown Tableland.

I have been living and working in Blackwater for about six months now. It is the kind of place best described as a “country town” and has a population of approximately 5500 residents. So it’s bigger than most country towns in this region.

This is because Blackwater is currently one of the Australian mining industry’s big players and is enjoying the prosperity of “the boom”driven by rapidly developing markets in nearby Asia.

Ludwig Leichhardt was the first European to visit this region in the Christmas of 1844.

This place is the traditional home of the Ghungalu, Kangalu and Canolu peoples.

me with “BLOCKADE”

This is me standing proud in front of my new work, titled “BLOCKADE”.

I created this piece for a recent art competition/exhibition called Castaway.

I had to get this piece out of me as I had been very unproductive, in terms of creativity, in the last twelve months. That’s not to say I’ve been lazy, but my day job takes a lot out of me and leaves me with very little energy for personal creative pursuits.

“BLOCKADE” references the recent North Korea santions action by the UN Security Council. It is created from masking tape and acrylic paints on South Korean Postal Service packing boxes I’d saved when I moved back to Australia in 2004.

I thought about the fishing boats and navy vessels I had seen along the coastline of South Korea. I lived there for just over three years and loved the place. Koreans in general are a kind and easy going people, have a beautiful culture, a great sense of humour and are only a tad reactionary.

I miss Korea and hope the two halves of it can work through their differences.

Emu Park bound.

November 10, 2006 · Leave a Comment

I’m off to Emu Park this afternoon. It’s one of my favorite places in Central Queensland.

It’s a small village 44 klms east of Rockhampton overlooking the islands of Keppel Bay. I go there to swim, sleep, think and rejuvenate.

I stay with an interesting friend who has a passion for heritage topics, Test Match quilting, and good food and wine.

Begin somewhere…

November 10, 2006 · Leave a Comment

As this is a Saturday morning and I’m awake and not stung, I have decided to have another go at blogging. I hope I can sustain my interest long enough to complete this post.

I think this blog, Tampered, will be about the ability to change things.

Over time, I wish to understand more about my place in this world.
